Derrick began his classes with TBR with a summer camp in 1990 at 10 years of age. During this workshop, he made a mask and learned how we all as individuals wear different masks during our lives. When asked if he got nervous prior to a performance, Derrick always said, "Yes, but once on stage, I'm okay."
Derrick's experiences with the many talented instructors at TBR helped mold him into a fine young man. His life tragically ended in an automobile accident on February 23, 1996, when he was just 15 years old.
Our goal in establishing this scholarship fund in Derrick's memory is to enable local students, who've never had the opportunity to express themselves through the medium of theatre, to attend one of TBR's summer camps. To this end, we are establishing the Derrick D. White Scholarship Fund with the Baton Rouge Area Foundation to be administered by the White Family and TBR. One middle school-aged student from the Greater Baton Rouge Area will be chosen as the scholarship recipient, and our hope is that the fund will grow to include additional scholarships in the future. Your generous donation will help us bring the joy of theatre to children for years to come. For more information on Derrick White, please see the letter below.

Derrick began his classes with Theatre Baton Rouge with a summer camp in 1990 at 10 years of age. During this workshop he made a mask and learned how we all as individuals wear different masks during our lives. Over the next several years he acted in musicals and was the lead performer in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown and Bye, Bye, Birdie. When asked if he got nervous prior to a performance, Derrick always said, “Yes, but once on stage, I’m okay.” For such a shy little boy, this was a bold statement, but once on stage, all shyness disappeared and he portrayed his character wonderfully. While baseball eventually took Derrick away from Theatre Baton Rouge, he always looked forward to and enjoyed the summer camps. Over the years Derrick never missed a chance to see a show and was fortunate to experience the likes of CATS, To Kill a Mockingbird and A Few Good Men. Derrick’s experiences with the many talented instructors at Theatre Baton Rouge helped mold him into the fine young man that he was at the time of his death. His life tragically ended in an automobile accident on February 23, 1996, when he was 15 years old.

To this end, we are establishing the Derrick D. White Scholarship Fund with the Baton Rouge Area Foundation to be administered by the White Family and TBR. Our sincere thanks are extended to Sue Hilliard for taking the time and thought to create this scholarship fund and Regi Mullins for his donation to bring the fund to fruition. All checks should be made payable to TBR (memo: Derrick White Scholarship Fund).
Thank you for your support.
